Use indoor plants to improve your health and create greater attentiveness!
STRESS IS A BIG ISSUE! Let’s combat it! A study has found that Singapore spends about US $2.3 billion or 18% of its total healthcare expenditure on stress related illnesses annually. The Straits Time (Singapore) reported on 22 Nov, 2019, that this high expenditure puts Singapore in the second highest spot behind Australia 18.8%. So why not create an oasis within your home or office using the hammock alongside with soothing wall designs and plants so one can use to wind down.
Here’s 4 BENEFITS of having plants for the workplace and the home. They can offer benefits like purifying the air, improving health, sharpening your focus and add that special visual appeal for your living space.
#1 REMOVE TOXINS IN THE AIR In a research conducted by NASA, plants can remove toxins from air –up to 87% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) every 24 hours. What are VOCs? They will include substances like formaldehyde (present in cigarette smoke and grocery bags), benzene and trichloroethylene (both found in man-made fibers, inks, solvents and paint). These benzene is commonly found in high concentrations in study settings, where books and printed papers are stored. To purify air, use 15-18 plants in 6-8-inch diameter pots for an 1,800-square-foot house. That’s roughly one largerplant every 100 square feet. Achieve similar results with two smaller plants (4-5-inch pots).
#2 IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY & ATTENTIVENESS Small indoor plants placed in small earthen pots can be placed on your decorative table to complement your wallpapers and furniture. Having pockets of the nature in your working place, reception and home can decrease fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms. In another study by the Agricultural, University of Norway, sickness rates fell by more than 60% in offices with plants.
DID YOU KNOW? A study at The Royal College of Agriculture in Circencester, England, found that students demonstrate 70% greater attentiveness when they’re taught in rooms containing plants. In the same study, attendance was also higher for lectures given in classrooms with plants.
#3 BETTER RECOVERY RATES At a Kansas State University, studies have shown that adding plants to hospital rooms will speed the recovery rates of surgical patients. It is found also that patients in rooms with plants requested less pain medication, have lower heart rates and blood pressure, experience less fatigue and anxiety, and their recovery rates were faster.
#4 ENLIVEN THE SPACE If you have a small corner, you could use freshly cut bouquets and fruits to enliven the space. Plants can add such visual appeal to your working or living space.
HOW MANY PLANTS NEEDED IN AN AREA TO COMBAT FATIGUE AND STRESS? Place one large plant (8-inch diameter pot or larger) every 129 square feet. In office or classroom settings, position plants so each person has greenery in view. Remember that for the best success with any houseplant, you need to match the right plant to the right growing conditions. Learn more in Tips for Healthy Houseplants. For low light situations, choose a plant adapted to those conditions
